    Melissa Gibbons, MS, CGC, is a certified genetic counselor and assistant professor at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and Children’s Hospital Colorado in Aurora, where she specializes in neurogenetics and neuromuscular conditions. Her professional interest includes increasing awareness of neuromuscular conditions through education of providers and families. Melissa is an advocate for increased awareness of the benefits of carrier testing, prenatal diagnosis, and newborn screening to allow for earlier access to approved and research therapies.

    Child Neurologist, Neuromuscular Section Head

    John F. Brandsema, MD, is an attending physician in neuromuscular/general neurology & electromyography and the Neuromuscular Section Head at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia in Pennsylvania. He has broad clinical and research interests in neuromuscular diseases, with a particular focus in clinical trials of novel therapies for childhood neuromuscular disorders. He earned his medical degree at Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada and completed his pediatric neurology residency at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, followed by the Partners Neuromuscular Fellowship at Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts.

    Richard Shell, MD

    Professor of Pediatrics

    Richard Shell, MD, is professor of pediatrics and section chief of the Department of Pulmonary Medicine at Nationwide Children's Hospital at The Ohio State University College of Medicine in Columbus. He plays an active clinical and research role in the care of patients with neuromuscular disease. Dr Shell’s other research interests include asthma and cystic fibrosis, where he assists in many clinical trials within his department. He is a member of the Therapeutic Development Network of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and has administrative rolls with both Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy (PPMD) and CureSMA. Dr Shell has been recognized by his patients for excellence in family-centered care. He received his medical degree from the Medical College of Ohio in Toledo.

    Rachel Schrader, MS, APRN, CPNP-PC

    Senior Vice President, Clinical Care

    Rachel Schrader MS, APRN, CPNP-PC, is the senior vice president of Clinical Care at Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy (PPMD) in Hackensack, New Jersey. In this role she leads PPMD’s care initiatives and serves as director of the Certified Duchenne Care Center Program, which includes nearly 30 certified centers across the United States. Prior to joining PPMD, Rachel started her career in the neuromuscular field as the nurse practitioner for a large pediatric neuromuscular center and research institute where she served as a co-investigator on multiple clinical trials and developed an interest in and passion for the Duchenne patient community.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Develop an enhanced index of suspicion for DMD in patients who present with signs and symptoms
  • Recognize mutations associated with DMD and how they relate to treatment decisions
  • Integrate key components of multidisciplinary care for patients with DMD, from initiation of targeted therapy to long-term care
  • Assess the therapeutic potential of available and emerging treatment options for the management of DMD
